Welcome to the WeatherWatch 4 Buffalo Weather Blog!
Welcome! The meteorologists of WeatherWatch4 are genuinely excited to invite your participation in our brand new weather blog. We intend to offer you more detailed discussions on ongoing and upcoming weather events and patterns, and we hope you'll offer us your thoughts and questions.
We can't always explain all weather phenomena on the air, and this will give us the opportunity to satisfy the curiosity of the many viewers who have a strong interest in meteorology. Lindsay, Mike, Mary Beth and I all have a passionate interest in our work. So, this is a fine opportunity for us to share some of our excitement with you.
A few ground rules: All posts must be civil, and we reserve the right to edit or delete inappropriate remarks. We want to keep this as a friendly forum. If you have a criticism (what meteorologist isn't going to get criticized?), please keep it polite. Of course, we'll do the same.
We will try to respond to your posts as promptly as possible. However, our primary mission is to forecast the weather for our viewers, so there may occasionally be a short delay in a response.
We will try to make our answers as authoritative as possible, based on accepted scientific principles. But in real science, if we are uncertain about an answer, it's our job to tell you we're uncertain.
We know from audience research here in WNY and around the country that the public's interest in weather is enormous, and we hope to satisfy at least a part of that interest.
That's it for the introduction. Let's get going!

Congratulations on the new weather blog! It's about time we in Western New York and surrounding areas had a place to "shoot the breeze" about something that effects us all, everyday of the year!
Congrats again from Lancaster Lenny!
Hey Don... Here's a question I have been wanting to ask for years.... would the western end of Lake Erie freeze as solid ( so to speak ) every winter if the ice boom was not in place? Or would the ice keep breaking into big chunks, thereby leaving the lake ice at this end less frozen or stable? I know they say ice would threaten the water/power intakes near Niagara Falls, but I was curious if the ice pack would be less dense throughout the winter. Thanks for the Weather Blog!
Your fan, Junius Ponds!
You should make this Buffalo Weather Blog easier to find! Now that I know where it is I think it's great. But boy did it take some serious searching! Keep up the great forecasting and Gotta Watch 4!
Bob
Good point. Maybe you could make special box like you use for Lindsays Links.
Lancaster Lenny
Hey, maybe Lindsay can do one of her Links Reports on this new blog!
Bob
Great idea Bob. I will feature our new Weather Blog next week on Lindsay's Links! (And I'll explain how to access our blog as well.)
Wow! Thanks for reading and responding Lindsay! I can't wait to see your "Links" report. So, how do you like Western New York so far? Was the weather much different where you went to school?
Thanks again. Bob
How about more thing's from wyo co we feel like we are in another planet at times trust me a lot goes on.i watch ch 4 all the time i also love this blog and by the way only a dusting on the ground in Strykersville Alice
We certainly could use more snowfall reports from Wyoming County residents. Neither the NWS nor WeatherWatch 4 receive that many reports from your county as a rule, and that's unfortunate.
Thanks for your thoughts, and for the "dusting" report.
Just Thank you for all you do!
From Jim in Clarence
Bob... Yes, I'm loving it here and also looking forward to the SNOW! The Winter's were quite different where I grew up in NJ and in PA (where I went to college). In NJ, we got more of the "Big" snow storms because of the Nor'Easters coming up the coast. (Blizzard of '93 & '96) Those were tons of fun and I have great memories/pictures of those two storms. During the four years living in Central PA, we didn't receive any big storms, however, temperatures usually ran colder, compared to NJ Winters. But I know I am in for more of a combination here (cold, wind & snow), but I am definitely looking forward to it!
Don and "crew" just wanted to thank you for all of your hard work at keeping us updated on the weather. I own a local business that is weather dependant, and look to the forecast on line and tv around the clock. thanks for being there.
I would like to know why the weather crawler alert appears on the analog channel but not the HD channel.
Rog.
Congratulations on the new blog. It's a great idea.
I just wanted to let you know that over the years I've discovered that your forecast is the most accurate for the city of St. Catharines, Ontario, Canada. For that reason I make a point of never missing one of your forecasts. However, I've noticed that lately you don't post the temperature for St. Catharines like you used to. It's a minor quibble but I miss feeling included in your forecasts and was wondering if there was any chance you might be able to put us back on your weather map?
Keep up the good work.
Hi, Rog:
To answer your inquiry, the engineering department is working on the HD/crawl matter. Thanks for your patience!
Hi, Stacey: Thanks for your post. I will check into getting St. Catharines back on the map. We redesigned our neighborhood weathernet map last month. I'll leave a note for my colleague, Mike Cejka, who takes care of this data.
Hi meteorologist from WIVB-- Thank you for starting this weather blog.
In reference to the pending weather pattern change--the last time I recall a frigid late November early December was in 1989--I think.
Don, I always watch your 11:00 weather forecast. By far the most comprehensive available to me on the tube. I live in Dunnville Ontario, which is on the North Shore of the lake, almost directly across from Dunkirk. We operate a Snowmobile dealership, and are therefore very interested in your snowfall predictions. We almost cry every time Buffalo and your south towns get hit with lake effect. Send some over here anytime, it would be appreciated. Thanks Don your weather insights are the best around. I know you are a Buffalo based station, but any more Southern Ontario info you can include in your forecasts would be appreciated. Thank you.
It's hard to be as detailed with Canadian info as we'd like to be, since the ratings system doesn't allow us to consider you part of our television market. But we will try to squeeze some pertinent information in there for you when possible.
Don your weather forecasts are better than the other guys in town...keep up the good work
I have a flight at 6:45 am Friday. I will be driving from the Bemus Point area. What do you think, should I go Friday morning, 3:30am, or go Thursday late afternoon or evening and get a hotel at the airport. Some predictions don't say much snow, and I remember how worried I was about driving to Buffalo for Thanksgiving, and the weather was fine. Help... Thanks.
i would just like to say who ever was respondsable for hiring lindsay good job she does a great job with the weather keep up the good work lindsay
anonymous from Bemus Point: You should be okay. There will be some weak lake snow as you head NE, so I'd allow some extra time, but roads will be passable, and the snowfall at that hour should be fairly light.
Hey Don, Mike, Mary Beth! You do such a good job it is amazing. I just wanted to say thanks for all the service over the years! Good luck on the Blog it is a great idea and great fun for weather junkies like myself.
Thank you for the kind words John! :)
