NPA Ice Storm Warning Sun thru Mon AM...

In addition to the Winter Weather Advisory for all of WNY & NPA, there is now an ICE STORM WARNING for Potter & McKean counties in NPA. This extends from 1pm Sunday to 7am Monday. Down in that direction the models are indicating the longest stretch of mixed precip as well as the most amount of precip. In other words... mixed precip will be the dominant precip type this afternoon and tonight in NPA. A quarter of an inch of ice accumulation is possible in that direction. With this amount of ice accumulation falling tree branches and power outages could possibly occur. Mary Beth and I will keep you posted!

For today though, first snow will spread from S to N early this afternoon. Then a transition to more mixed precipitation will also follow the same progression... S to N this afternoon and into tonight. Some minor snow accumulations (an inch or two) are possible especially for the northern counties where it will remain snow the longest. Down along the S. Tier and NPA, precip will remained in mixed form through Monday AM.

Tough travel will be the real problem tonight in Northern PA and the southern tier with freezing rain continuing to fall and temps hovering close to the freezing mark. Ice may accumulate up to 1/4" in these parts. Winds fairly light tonight....I don't anticipate widespread downed tree limbs and powerlines. However, isolated instances may occur. Travel in the metro area is also slippery with freezing rain since late this afternoon. There's a thin glaze of ice on the roads...the drive in the city and surrounding suburbs is slippery as well. News photogs have said they've seen some salt trucks around town. Nice to know that. Give some extra time for the morning drive, folks! The wintry mix will continue into the overnight. No big accumulations, but glazed roads with some minor snow totals likely.

Ice Storm WARNING has been cancelled for Northern PA. It's been replaced with a Winter Weather ADVISORY overnight along with the rest of WNY. 4Warn Doppler shows wintry mix becoming more scattered and spotty...but there's pockets of drizzle, freezing drizzle and light snow. Untreated roads may be slippery into the early morning drive.

Ayuud: Not sure where you got that info from. Thursday looks more of a wintry mix situation...and it's not a system that will stick around these parts for too long. Lake snow potential at the end of the week could be interesting...

Mostly rain event for Tuesday turning over to a mix and a few snow showers weds. morning. Next system comes in on Thurs, bringing perhaps some accumulating snow/mix precip. to the niagara frontier, and more of a ice/mix situation to the southern tier. Once that system goes through a system over Northern Ontario will give us a Southwest/West wind which my drive some Lake Effect Snow up to Buffalo and the immediate suburbs possibly thurs night and friday. Are conditions favorable for LES on thurs. night and friday and will Buffalo be affective? And how much snow/mix accumlation on Thurs?

Thanks!

Rich,

Your post started out with a lot of declarative sentences, and ended with some questions.

Too early for declarative sentences on precip amounts on Thursday, or whether we're going to stay with mostly snow or a mix. The winds for Thursday night and Friday will eventually go around to a WNW flow, but there's some chance of a brief period of more SWly winds toward Friday morning. I'll have more on a new thread later this evening.

Thanks!

Sorry for the declarative statements. Just was giving a try at forecasting. I know, not to good. When you go to NWS, I see all the forecast models, and the precipitation forecasts for 24,48, etc hours.. What model shows you the wind direction. I know the graphical 2-d shows wsw winds thurs. night into friday turning W then NW fri. Night into sat. Just wondering where you look for low pressure directions, wind directions, and precip. forecasts. What models and where to go under the NWS website.

Thanks!!

NO NEED TO MENTION TO VIEWERS ABOUT THE COLD HAZARDS TO THEM!!!! I'AM A BIT DISMAYED THAT NOT ONE METEROLOGISTS CARED ENOUGH TO BRING THIS POINT OF INTEREST TO IT'S VIEWERS!
