Weekend Winter Weather Setup...Part 2 WINTER STORM WARNING POSTED

Late this afternoon the lake snow watch issued from the southtowns down through the southern tier was upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning Monday-Tuesday. Also, a WIND ADVISORY is in effect for the entire region from 6am to 1pm tomorrow. Great call by NWS, seeing a tightly wound up Low with cold winds on the backside lined up west shifting nw tomorrow. The warning is twofold: a. heavy lake snow, b. strong winds with gusts up to 50mph. This will make for difficult travel with blowing snow creating whiteouts. all of us will be dealing snow showers and wind tomorrow, but certainly much more significant down south. It appears the band will gradually sink from the southtowns into ski country and the southern tier. If you've forgotten your winter weather driving skills, you'd better brush up fast! This event, however, is spectacular news for the ski resorts...1-2 feet of snow expected in these parts. Here comes winter! Of course, safety is our biggest concern. Proceed with caution....

TIMING, TIMING,TIMING!!!!
well here's the rain, finally!
Has this thing stalled over us??? I see a stationary front set up over us. Severe Thunderstorm warnings are issued. This thing has stalled and is intensifying over the lakes. we're in for it, I'm afraid...
Its my opinion, and JUST and opinion, but I think schools should be urged to cancel for tomorrow.

now I cant fint the sever TS warnings but they were posted about 1/2 hour ago. Storm tracker has a few cells, looks like the SE side if the system has more frozen precip..is it ice or snow?
Anyone in the Sou Tier, pipe in and let me know, OK?
Still looks stationary, yet the radar has the precip passing from west to east.
So tough trying to figure out whats actually happening!

On this you can see the stationary front and two cold fronts headed towards one another??? Theres also a significant amount of lake effect hitting the SW side of the other great lakes eg..in Michigan and so forth.. Look at the iso bars around there...they're mighty close...very windy. Thats what we're looking at...

Lakeshadow..yes there is some icing across the southern tier and northern pa tonight...the brighter returns on doppler radar reflect the icing. There may be some thunder and lightning overnight as the cold front comes through. I do not anticipate severe thunderstorms, though.

Snowcrazy, no big lake snows scheduled for the metro area just yet. We should get several inches of snow in the metro area over the next couple of days. Also, watching an impulse pushing through here midweek and toward the weekend that may produce some general snow showers...enough to shovel.

That front still looks like its stationary. I'm also concerned with the cold front whipping through from the SW. Could this cause converging winds, and possibly disrupt the surface air flow that's predicted?

December 2, 2007 11:56 PM
Anonymous lakeshadow said...

Not the front thats stationary but the system. Theres a stationary indication centered around the low.

The Low has stalled and the mesoscale analysis page shows intensification in the atmospheres instability. This is the point where mother nature does her own thing. Anythings possible at this point.

I am so sick of ALL the weather people being wrong, Its almost 4pm on monday and im on the boarder of s, erie catta. couty and we got maybe a dustin to 1/2 and inch. Oh we are suppose to get 1 to 2 feet we didnt get anything, they are never right all we got was wind, that is it no snow at all. Even more south in fredonia we got maybe 3 inches not much for all this coverage and warning, im better off sticking my head out the window then listening to any of the weather people, im not pick ing on chan 4 cause they all got it wrong!!

Well now that the Mid atlantic low has re-emerged and is now restrengthening (rapidly) it is causing a NW flow. Otherwise, the Low that went over us has stalled out again and there is a stationary front to our North. For the time being the snows will remain widespread throughout WNY with steady accumulations in the hills. Once this big fat lazy low just north of NYS catches its breath and heads off, the NW winds will kick in even stronger and bring you your snow, anonymous. Systems stall. It happens A LOT over the lakes... Here this thing wont barely budge all day!

Is this cold weather going to stick around now? I dont want to see the temperatures jump up again. Snowmobile season opens up in a couple weeks. Bring the snow!

Hey i just have a question on what im going to see tonight as far as snow. When i dont watch Dons forcast i go online to www.noaa.com according to them they said Eden can see a possible 3-5 inches. Now looking at the radar it seems the lake effect in setting up in two differnt bands one north of Eden and the other south. Is there going to be any strenghting in lake Effect snows?

Well if you read my comments from the previous thread i had asked ab out the weather in Arcade today and had wondered why after looking at all of the models that wyoming county were not intially included with the WS warning.. I was told i could see 3-5 inches today.. Well after everything is said and done i am up to about 8 inches and now the wyoming county is included in the warning.. If i could see it why couldn't anyone else?

Yorkshire, in Cattaraugus County, has had lake efffect snow all day and high winds. No roads were plowed or salted today. I drive school bus and it was a horrible drive. Schools should have been closed today.

Its frustrating because over night there was significant development that stalled out the system for a bit. It kept the winds more westerly and lighter for the first part of the day. The low that was supposed to move offshore and drag our winds from the NW didn't come until after 4pm today. There was nobody around reading this and I posted conditions well into the morning.

Sorry I haven't been contributing the last couple of days. My home office computer has been more on the fritz than off.

A couple of strange posts here, especially from one anonymous poster crying that ALL the weather people were wrong. Real and nonsensical criticism goes with the territory, and that post falls under the latter. I couldn't have asked for any of our forecasts to work out better than those we left you with late last week in timing, amounts, precip type, etc (now that I said that, I'm sure I'll bust something big time.)

Lakeshadow, I'm not sure if you're suggesting that other posters go by your post, if you're suggesting that our STAFF do. Let's not get too, too serious around here. This is a blog, gang.

I'll be starting a new thread a little later this evening.

Wow..... with all homegrown weather experts out there we should never be caught off guard again! Quick question though.... how come all these genius's aren't working for NWS or better yet starting their own million dollar companies keeping everyone ahead of the storms?

Just an observation from someone who knows little about the science but is a pretty good judge of human nature. Seems like a lot of "my weather 'dipstick' is bigger than yours" going on during some of these posts.

Thanks for the good job Don and Crew!

I have meant no disrepect at all of the NWS office nor channel 4.. It is once again shows that they do the best we can with the techmology at hand and mother nature sometimes has a mind of her own..

It is crazy how it can chnage in an instant with Lake Effect..

Don,
Do you think the bands will continue to move around or do you think that they will stay put

hi folks....with the prediction that the weather will be bad this week-end....would you be kind enough to notify viewers of the pets left outdoors???? With the busy schedule of people today, sadly enough some of them just seem to be insipid,of the dangers and harm the weather can have on animals.....frost bite, and worst of all no means of getting out of the elements!!! Thank-you so very much from the pets and person who, obviously, cares enough about animals! Have a good day!
