WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY Sunday

A Winter Weather Advisory goes into effect tomorrow for all of WNY and Northern PA. System pushing up from the Ohio Valley...warm air aloft and shallow cold air at the surface. Travel will turn slippery in many areas as the day goes on, as a wintry mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain are in the works. We're not expecting heavy accumulations, but when it comes to ICE, all it takes is a little bit for cars and people to go flying. The first places to see the precip are Northern Pennsylvania and the southern tier...that'll happen in the early morning hours. The mix will then spread northward throughout all WNY later on, with the intensity picking up in the late afternoon/evening. Not trying to sound alarmist here! Just encouraging folks to use extra caution on the roads...and sidewalks.

Yes, indeed, Petie...perhaps, along with a nice cup of hot chocolate and an apple pie! Just hoping Bills fans have safe travels to/from the Ralph! Go Bills!

This is where you folks shine. You are pretty specific about locations compared to the general advisories I can hear or read elsewhere. I imagine it will get more specific as the day goes on tomorrow. It DOES sound like a good afternoon and evening to stay in.

Thanks Weathermom. We try to be specific as possible. I'm just hoping the roads don't "shine" tomorrow...freezing rain can make travel quite slippery. If you're heading out tomorrow, just be extra careful driving. I think the metro area will be spared during the first half of the day. Southern tier should see it first, as I previously mentioned. Precip should be on the light side.

yea, I agree... it would be a good day to stay home and take it easy. Thanks for the update Mary Beth : )

It looks as though we WNY'ers may be dealing with this kind of weather for a good part of this upcoming week... just take it slow, be cautious, and stay in touch with channel 4 for the weather! Thats what ill be doing! Thanks again for all your hard work Mary Beth!!

It's not a huge storm here, Sean. An advisory is issued when weather conditions are expected to cause significant inconvenience which may be hazardous. You can travel, but just use caution!

In addition to the Winter Weather Advisory for all of WNY & NPA, there is now an ICE STORM WARNING for Potter & McKean counties in NPA. This extends from 1pm Sunday to 7am Monday. Down in that direction the models are indicating the longest stretch of mixed precip as well as the most amount of precip. In other words... mixed precip will be the dominant precip type this afternoon and tonight. A quarter of an inch of ice accumulation is possible in that direction. Falling tree branches and power outages may occur in NPA today and tonight. Mary Beth and I will keep you posted!

Yep, it was a good day to stay home and watch the game. I taught my 3 year-old to say, "Squish the fish!" Time well spent. :)

Marshall: That's too cute! If your 3-year old has had success saying that phrase..here's a suggestion: why don't you try teaching the cloud name, "Cumulonimbus"? This way your toddler can started as a weather groupie at a young age! Ha!
